Lockdown Diaries: Alberto Mingardi talks about the crisis caused by coronavirus
10/07/2020

John O’Sullivan, President of The Danube Institute took a deep interview with Alberto Mingardi, executive director of Istituto Bruno Leoni.

"Societies such as ours should better prepare for this kind of event. The fact that basically we are dealing with an epidemic pretty much the same way that our ancestors did in the 15th century. So, there is some sort of a gap – it seems to me – between the bulk of scientific knowledge we do have on one hand and the strategies that we are putting in place.

The economic cost is apparent, is evident. We are getting into an economic crisis, which did not generate in the market, but it’s a crisis and it’s basically the product of the fact that governments stalled economic activities to terminate or freeze. We do have also psychological costs. Not everybody has a nice flat, lots of people need to stay home in very uncomfortable conditions. And I think there are also costs in the longer run for healthcare, because clearly you know you eat a lot, you do not do enough physical activity, you don’t stay in the sun enough, so all of these may be a bounce back if we continue to prolong the lockdown. So, the impact is clearly going to be quite profound."
