Vershbow: Can Central Europe Be Defended?
Past Events / Videos
Keynote address by the Deputy Secretary General of NATO | 18th May 2015

Recent events in Ukraine have served to focus attention on Russia’s declared aim of creating ‘a belt of security’ around its borders, and its tendency to equate its own security with the limited sovereignty of its neighbours. It has also drawn attention to increased Russian defence expenditure and the development of new weapons systems, as well as new concepts of warfare at a time when Western defence budgets have been cut back.

The implications of these developments were discussed by Alexander Vershbow, Deputy Secretary General of the NATO, at an international conference organized by the Danube Institute and the NATO Public Diplomacy Divisionat in Budapest, on 18th May 2015. Introductory remarks by János Martonyi, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary.
