Culture in Crisis: what the COVID-19 pandemic reveals about the West and its prospects

Date: 13/12/2021
While Covid-19 is often construed as having apocalyptic - in the sense of cataclysmic - consequences for public health, in this talk, Danube Institute Visiting Fellow Dr Calum TM Nicholson suggests it is also an ‘apocalypse’ in the original sense of the word: a revelation of what had previously been concealed. Just as someone’s character is revealed in crisis, so the true character of the West, and particularly its institutions, has been revealed by the Covid-19 crisis. The talk explores what the crisis has revealed about our relationship to science, the State, the economy, the media, the past, the future, each other, and perhaps most importantly, ourselves.
