Daniel A. Bell on New Confucianism

Daniel A. Bell on New Confucianism Join us for the sixth webinar in the Danube Institute's "China Keywords" series, co-sponsored by the Telos-Paul Piccone Institute, where we delve into the topic of New Confucianism with renowned philosopher Daniel A. Bell.

About the Speakers:

Daniel A. Bell is a leading advocate of Confucian political meritocracy as an alternative to Western liberal democracy and Marxism-Leninism. He currently serves as the Chair of Political Theory at the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Law. Bell has also held prestigious positions as the Dean of the School of Political Science at Shandong University and as a professor of philosophy at Tsinghua University.

Dr. Eric Hendriks is a Fellow at the Danube Institute in Budapest and the Director of the China Initiative at the Telos-Paul Piccone Institute in New York. He has previously held academic positions at Peking University, the University of Bonn, the University of Mannheim, and the University of Chicago.

His acclaimed works include:

  • The Dean of Shandong (2023)
  • Just Hierarchy (2021, co-authored with Wang Pei)
  • The China Model (2015)
  • China’s New Confucianism (2008)

These influential books, all published by Princeton University Press, examine Confucian traditions and their potential for shaping modern political thought.

What to Expect:
In this webinar, Bell will discuss how the revival of New Confucianism in China has created opportunities for innovative political ideas. While critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Bell’s nuanced approach considers China's modern challenges and traditions, offering a unique perspective that sets him apart from typical Western critics.

Moderator:
The session will be moderated by Eric Hendriks, a Dutch sociologist, Visiting Fellow at the Danube Institute, and director of TPPI’s China Initiative. He will lead the conversation with Bell, followed by an open Q&A session, where participants are encouraged to engage and ask questions.
