France’s Twin Crisis: Is France in a Pre-revolutionary State?

The Danube Institute presents Unknown Knowns: Adventures in the New Economics—a 2025 panel series in collaboration with the Danube Institute.

The situation in France is starting to look very similar to 1787. With a fiscal crisis currently generating a constitutional crisis, it is hard not to hear echoes on the old debates around the Estates General. How bad are the French finances? And what does this mean for the future of the Fifth Republic?

Swedish opinion columnist and blogger Malcom Kyeyune will be a co-panellist to broaden the perspective. His work focuses mainly on the broader political crises that now face many countries in the West at the dawn of the multipolar age.

Featured participants:

  • Malcolm Kyeyune, writer and essayist based in Uppsala, Sweden
  • Philip Pilkington, Macroeconomist and Visiting Fellow, Danube Institute

Moderator:

  • Hugo Martin, Researcher, Danube Institute
