Spectrum Street Epistemology with Peter Boghossian

Dr. Peter Boghossian is a philosopher, Founding Faculty Advisor at the University of Austin, and the Executive Director of National Progress Alliance. As a visiting researcher at the Danube Institute, he brings to Budapest his Spectrum Street Epistemology program, which has gained great success at universities across the Anglosphere and in American public discourse.

Peter Boghossian's work is based on the principle of making the tools of professional philosophers accessible to the widest possible audience. His goal is to help people address seemingly unsolvable problems and facilitate the civil exchange of often contradictory arguments and worldviews.

Spectrum Street Epistemology is an innovative program in which Boghossian uses Socratic dialogue to help participants critically examine and evaluate the quality of reasoning behind their belief systems. Through this process, they can calibrate the strength of their convictions based on the available evidence.

The method is primarily applied in group settings, where participants can physically indicate the strength of their opinion on a given topic using a seven-point Likert scale, ranging from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree." This visual and interactive approach allows multiple people to share their thoughts simultaneously, making the discussion of different perspectives more transparent.

The program’s aim is to create a calm and respectful atmosphere where participants—whether friends, family members, or strangers—can explore the foundations of their own and others' belief systems and reasoning on various topics, particularly those involving divisive moral and ethical questions.

Spectrum Street Epistemology has already proven its effectiveness internationally in various locations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Now, Peter Boghossian is bringing this interactive epistemological production to Hungary, hosted by the Danube Institute.
