Hungary and the State of Texas are engaged in a similar two-front struggle when it comes to irregular migration. In the US, there is a clear disagreement on migration policy between the Biden administration and the state of Texas with the former pursuing a liberal approach towards immigration while the latter having to withstand the blunt force of irregular migration. Texas was forced to enact its own policies to stem irregular migration and simultaneously defend them in federal courts against litigation brought by the Biden administration. In Europe, Hungary is located in a strategic position and serves as the gatekeeper of the Schengen area on the Western Balkan migratory route. The Hungarian government must concurrently defend the country’s (and the EU’s) borders and fight pro-immigration stakeholders at the EU level.
