We are pleased to invite you to a standing lecture by Dr Alexander McKenna on the historic visit of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to Budapest in 1984. This significant moment in late Cold War diplomacy marked the first official visit of a British Prime Minister to communist Hungary, symbolising a subtle yet notable shift in East-West relations and raising questions about Britain’s role in the changing political landscape of Central and Eastern Europe.
Drawing on his expertise in British diplomacy and Cold War history, Dr McKenna will explore the political context of the visit, its reception in both countries, and its implications for Hungary’s evolving relationship with the West.
