The Abraham Accords are of essential importance in securing and ensuring the peace and prosperity of the entirety of the Middle East. The work of the Abraham Accords Prosperity Group and its emphasis on creating economic interdependence between Israel and the other nations of the region is the key to ensuring long-term peaceful cooperation in the region. To secure that end, it is important to focus on not only the creation of transnational businesses but on the trade networks upon which they rely. With increased turbulence in the region due to the current US-Iran War, and the constant pressure Iran is able to exert globally, thanks to their strategic location on the Strait of Hormuz, if we are to ensure a permanent peace agreement in the region, it is imperative that we remove any and all political and economic leverage from the region’s primary supporter of conflict and terrorism, Iran.
In that spirit, the proposed India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is a perfect extension of the Abraham Accords and its goals of creating peace through economic integration throughout the region. IMEC, a newly proposed trade route already endorsed by 7 member states (India, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy) and the European Union, would see the creation of a new land-based trade route from India to Europe. AA-IMEC would both bypass the Strait of Hormuz, removing Iran’s leverage and threat to global trade in the region, and would ultimately force deeper, more integrated economic cooperation between the states of the region and Israel. The result? Real economic cooperation resulting in billions of dollars in annual trade revenue that would provide real-world incentives for continued cooperation.
Join us for a discussion to see if IMEC is the solution to not only securing international trade but peace in the region as we know it.
