Music was once an integral part of European philosophical and political culture, especially in the late eighteenth and entire nineteenth centuries. After the disaster of World War I, however, music faded in importance and became relegated to museum status. In this bracing lecture, historian Michael Walsh charts the influence of such major musical figures as Mozart, Beethoven, and Wagner on the totality of European culture, and suggests way to restore its primacy once again.
