Today's man proclaims personal freedom as the supreme value in all aspects of life, and sees tradition as a shackle. But to turn our backs on tradition is to break away from the very basis of existence. We want to make our lives easier, freer, unconstrained, but in the end we tie ourselves to nuggets - such as material wealth - that actually require us to sacrifice our freedom.
Iranian-born Sohrab Ahmari became a Christian as an adult. Western culture, with its Judeo-Christian foundations, had not been ingrained in his cells for centuries, which is perhaps why he is able to look to our tradition in the same way that his great predecessors, from St. Augustine to John Henry Newman, have travelled a winding road.
As a value. As a compass. As help.
Why did God ordain a day of rest? Can a non-religious person be spiritual? Does God need politics? What is freedom for? Is sex a private matter? What good is death? To answer these questions, the author draws on masters as great as St Thomas Aquinas, Seneca, Confucius, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, C. S. Lewis and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.
His answers will make us reassess what we thought about tradition and realise that tradition is nothing more than wisdom, faith and knowledge handed down from generation to generation for the benefit of the individual and of all humanity. It is an unbroken thread on which successive generations can be strung like pearls.
