Fall Coursework: October 2024
Location: itt várlak! - Aulich utca 8., 1054 Budapest
Time: 11:00 A.M. - 13:00 P.M. (each class)
Class Schedule:
• Monday, October 14: Theme and Plot
• Thursday, October 24: Story
• Monday, October 28: Character
Course Overview:
Mr. Michael Walsh will lead a series of weekly master classes on the craft of writing a novel, using his new work-in-progress, Tasso’s Garden, to illustrate the creative process in real time. This novel, which features the renowned composer Franz Liszt as a central character and includes settings in Hungary, will serve as a live demonstration of the key elements of fiction writing.
Throughout the course, Mr. Walsh will cover fundamental elements of historical fiction — theme, plot, structure, style, dialogue — while students will begin crafting their own short fiction works. These stories will evolve over the course of the October program, with feedback and development continuing when Mr. Walsh returns in the spring of 2025.
For additional reading, Mr. Walsh suggests his novels Exchange Alley (set in Moscow and NYC at the end of the Cold War) or And All the Saints, a fictionalized autobiography of Prohibition-era gangster Owney Madden, both available on Kindle.
We look forward to your participation in this enriching course!
